SAFER-SIM, with the University of Iowa, has developed a free, self-guided, online resource that allows Scouts to complete merit badges completely virtually. We are giving Scouts the opportunity to complete the Traffic Safety Merit Badge and the Engineering Merit Badge at their own pace. Some of the Scouts in your council have already utilized this resource, but we would like to expand our reach even more!

Traffic Safety Merit Badge

Staying safe in traffic wherever you live is getting more difficult all the time, as more and more people take to the road. Earning the Traffic Safety merit badge will give Scouts some crucial tools to stay safer when driving a car on a highway, riding a bike across town, or jogging across a busy street.  This online resource will present all the information needed to earn the merit badge.

Four online sessions will be available in May and June to complete requirement 5b. Click here to learn more and get started on the badge today!

Engineering Merit Badge

The future is now! Whether it is improving personal electronics, developing health care solutions, creating automated vehicles, protecting the environment or sending people to Mars, engineers are using math and science to create a better tomorrow. Earning the Engineering Merit Badge will give Scouts a better understanding of how engineers work and how to apply the engineering process to daily problems. This online resource will present all the information needed to earn the merit badge.

Two online sessions will be offered in May and June to complete requirement 4. Click here to learn more and get started on the badge now!

About SAFER-SIM:

Our goal is to gain more awareness for these resources, so if there are any Scouts that may be interested in doing it, feel free to share this in your newsletters, social media, or at any upcoming meetings. For full instructions, you can check out our website to learn more about the Traffic Safety Merit Badge and the Engineering Merit Badge.

SAFER-SIM is comprised of a multidisciplinary, synergistic team of researchers in human factors, engineering, computer science, and psychology who will use innovative simulation approaches ranging from microsimulation to human-in-the-loop simulation to promote safety. SAFER-SIM will sponsor research, outreach activities in STEM areas, and aid workforce development efforts in transportation safety.

Exclusive to SAFER-SIM is our ability to study how road users, roadway infrastructure, and new vehicle technologies interact and interface with each other using microsimulation and state-of-the-art driving, bicycling, pedestrian simulators. Our platform will be used to not only understand present needs, but also to evaluate and develop futuristic technologies.
