NRA Shotgun Basic Course

Students in this course learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components; shotgun shell malfunctions; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting Handbook, take a Basics of Shotgun Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.  Students will utilize the instructor’s firearms and ammunition.  This course is a required pre-requisite for the NRA Instructor course and a minimum firearm handling and marksmanship competency must be demonstrated to successfully complete the course. 

  • Course starts promptly at 8:00am on Saturday morning and will last about 8 hours.
  • Participants may ask for overnight accommodations at ISR for this weekend.
  • Meals are not included.  Participants are responsible for all their own meals. 
  • Uniforms are not required.
  • Limit of 10 participants
  • As with all BSA activities, Youth Protection Training is required of all adult leaders in attendance.
